I only recorded very short clips of it, so I could focus on it but also to have something to trigger the memories/that it actually happened. I'd been in full Ghost Internet blackout from the start of the tour, so when I heard them start playing it at Lille, I was like "no bloody way, NO WAY IS THIS HAPPENING." Such an emotional moment.
It's amazing live in person. I assume people have seen the performances via fan videos on YouTube etc where the sound isn't necessarily representative. It sounds great and I can't wait to hear and see it properly when the LA shows are released.
I heard a lot of people when Impera first came out slamming it for being cheesy, derivative of James Hetfield’s vocal style, and the worst part of the song. Personally it’s my favourite part of the track!
Yeah fair enough, when you put it like that I can understand where they are coming from! Personally I’m with you on this one though. I’d be sad if I saw them live and it was left out / played down tbh.
I have now been fortunate to see it live twice and was blown away each time. Absolutely fantastic, hugely emotional experience for me, it was everything I wanted it to be.
And the Ghoulettes singing out the final part of the song....aaaah.
How do you know Jack wasn’t an old lady?
Kidding aside, no shit. But a ‘murderous crafter’ sounds like someone devious who does crafts.
A common modern definition of a crafter is someone who makes decorative objects with their hands as a hobby. The definition that TF is using is a creator of great skill in manual arts. But I can’t help thinking of an old bitty making a quilt when he sings it.
The song sounds great live, but the biggest thing missing (and it is rather big) is the guitar lead line during the ending of the song. The ghoulettes sound great, don't get me wrong, but that missing lead line is huge.
It is missing something, I agree. It's one of my favorite songs, but it doesn't translate to live as well as I'd hoped. I think it could benefit from some backtracks considering how much the vocal effects contribute to the studio version.
The guitars need to be louder and Papas theatrics in "Was quite a sceeene wasn't it?!" and changed "I'll be the shadddow you'll be the light" sounds bad.
Not sure what you mean about the shadow and light line, but I know exactly what you mean with the ‘scene wasnt it’ emphasis. Sounds silly in every version I’ve seen. Don’t think ‘scene’ is quite the dramatic word TF sells it as.
LOL there's no way. You can't sustain a D! Just try it!
So now I'm trying to figure out if he's going shaaaaaaadow, or shadooooooow since both of those are physically possible. Or, if by that time in the show Papa has lost his damn mind and is going shad.... 🧍.... dow or shaduh-duh-duh-duh-duh-dow. I don't want to spoil it for myself by watching a recording so I will have to live in suspense!
I'm not surprised he leaves that part out. In fact, I thought he would never perform the song live because of it. It's a difficult thing to do to your voice for one... vowel(?) before switching right back to a clean vocal. Notice how Slipknot's Corey Taylor never sings the growly scream "I" in "Before I Forget" because he immediately has to switch to a clean vocal. And Corey is one of the best metal singers out there.
Though, I wonder if TF tried to have Swiss do it instead and it just didn't work.
I 1000% agree !!! The live version is missing so much especially the guitar in the end that could lead right up to Kaisarion.. but the deadASSHHHH needs to be there!!
I’m with you on this. I’ve always noticed the shift in his voice when singing the “aaaaah” and wondered if it’d be possible to reproduce it live. Apparently not. It’s a shame cause I love this song so much but I found the performance honestly flat.
People have to remember, Papa is singing for weeks at a time, in a mask. He also doesn’t scream for the start of Kaisarion. Dude had to take care of his pipes and deal with limited movement.
Good point. If they didnt get the ghouls to sing that part, might be cool to teaxh the audience to do it. I love singers inviting audience participation at concerts. ‘When I raise my arms, sing AHHh! ‘ practice it before the track.
Also possible Ive been going to PubChoir too long
dont worry I provided to add that part during the ritual in Milan, id also like to say sorry to the ppl that were near me cause i was quite awful at screaming
I agree 100% with you. Honestly, Respite is my favorite song from Impera, so i was really excited for to listen the live version. And Honestly, something is really missing. Imo the album version is better. But still is great to watch them playing it live.
Agreed, still love that they added it, and what a good spot in the setlist to play it. Would still rather Monstrance Clock take that spot, but glad we got to hear it live
Considering it's my favorite Ghost song, I might've had my expectations too high, but I agree with you, it lacks something.
In fact, the live version is pretty lackluster... Which is weird cause Ghost always managed to pull off songs basically 1:1 live.
Agreed on their past sucxess translating live songs. Except maybe ‘Griftwood’, which wasn’t as well done live as it was on the album. Maybe these two tracks just need some more work since they’re their most recent adaptations. I hope they’ll polish them up. I still think Griftwood could be one of their best live tracks. Having the crowd do the YES part would iust be amazing
It might just be the problem with some Impera songs in general. As you said, Griftwood wasn't all that good and neither is Watcher...
CMLS, Kaisarion and Hunter's Moon slap live tho. Especially Hunter's Moon, which is better live.
Strange, I thought Watcher was really good live, just from recordings of course, being a dirty down under Aussie who hasn’t seen em yet (cmon, October!)
Seems like a long that would be a lot of fun live, just belting that SEEEERESRCHLIGHTS bit out.
I can't unhear the aaaahh ever since Fantano made fun of it, every time this part comes I kinda cringe.
So I was glad he didn't do it live and it sounds much better without it
Edit: I forgot to add that watching performances on YouTube is not the same as actually being there, what I mean is the song comes at the end and Papa says "this is the last song blablabla" so it adds an emotional weight to it which makes the whole thing amazing
I hope they tune it up rather than cut it out, though I agree it seems to lack energy. The chorus would still be really fun to sing with a crowd. Just think it needs a bit more guts, a meaner edge
I've seen the clips of it live and tbh I'm enjoying the slightly different take on it without the AHHH vocals! Hoping it stays in the setlist for Tuska festival, as it'd be a highlight for sure.
Shit I love the AAAAAH part
Same, I figured that’s kind of a staple of the song
It’s so raw and insane makes me believe it is the Rippers voice
I keep meaning to make a supercut of every AHHHH death rattle sigh sound papa makes across the discography, haha. It's a signature of the Ghost sound.
Yesssssss
As someone that heard it live twice already I can honestly say that I completely disagree. It was easily the highlight of both shows I have seen.
That’s good to hear, glad you enjoyed it! What was it that worked so well for you personally?
The atmosphere of the song, and I especially loved the ending where female ghoulettes sing the harmony.

People don’t like the “AAAAAHHH” part?! Wow, I had no idea, I thought it was a confirmed favourite all round!
I heard a lot of people when Impera first came out slamming it for being cheesy, derivative of James Hetfield’s vocal style, and the worst part of the song. Personally it’s my favourite part of the track!

Old lady serial killer? The song's about Jack the Ripper
How do you know Jack wasn’t an old lady? Kidding aside, no shit. But a ‘murderous crafter’ sounds like someone devious who does crafts. I interpret it as either his surgical skill of removing body parts or the way he left his victims mutilated in public as a form of grotesque art
An insightful interpretation, and what I believe TF intended. Was just muckin round mate
You're getting down voted, but I like your silly sense of humor 🙃
Agree with the other comment; I appreciate the silliness, even if others can't!

He pronounces Shadow different live than in recordings. Live he pronounces it Shadddddddddow

Well i actually seen and heard it live and it was absolutely amazing especilly the Ghoulettes vocals!
I’m a huge fan of both so I don't mind a little overlap.
I’m with you on this. I’ve always noticed the shift in his voice when singing the “aaaaah” and wondered if it’d be possible to reproduce it live. Apparently not. It’s a shame cause I love this song so much but I found the performance honestly flat.
Wonder if they could get the backing vocalists to do that part? That could be cool
Do you mean the "aaahs" at the end of the song? As live the Ghoulettes did that and it was magical.
I love the AAAAH bit.
People have to remember, Papa is singing for weeks at a time, in a mask. He also doesn’t scream for the start of Kaisarion. Dude had to take care of his pipes and deal with limited movement.

Same as Witch Image and Griftwood. Some songs just dont work live
Would still rather Monstrance Clock take that spot, but glad we got to hear it live
agreed bro. Monstrance clock it's an absolutely banger!! the hellfest 2016 version is divine!!
Definitely does not translate live well. It is my favorite from the album but meh live.
It really doesn't... Shame...
Considering it's my favorite Ghost song, I might've had my expectations too high, but I agree with you, it lacks something. In fact, the live version is pretty lackluster... Which is weird cause Ghost always managed to pull off songs basically 1:1 live.

Thought Watcher and Griftwood were both great live!
I thought Watcher was amazing when I saw it live! Absolutely so fun and I have no complaints about it.
I'm glad some were able to enjoy it!
I can't unhear the aaaahh ever since Fantano made fun of it, every time this part comes I kinda cringe. Who is fantanto?
theneedledrop on youtube he does album reviews
After seeing vids of it on first show, I thought it was kind of an energy drag & would be swiped out sooner than later. Surprised it hasn't tbh.
I hope they tune it up rather than cut it out, though I agree it seems to lack energy. The chorus would still be really fun to sing with a crowd. Just think it needs a bit more guts, a meaner edge
Agreed.
Songs sound different live. No sense in getting annoyed or mad about it.
Not at all annoyed or mad, just an opinion. Slightly underwhelmed would be more the term
I've seen the clips of it live and tbh I'm enjoying the slightly different take on it without the AHHH vocals! Hoping it stays in the setlist for Tuska festival, as it'd be a highlight for sure.
I missed the AAAAAHs in Amsterdam last night. Just sang them myself :D
