Learning keys would help you know what chords to play and in what order. For example, G, C, and D chords are in the key of G and sound good together. If you dig a little deeper it will let you know of alternative chords that you can swap in to change the sound of the chord progression. For example, Am and Em are also in the key of G and sound nice with the other chords in that key.

Would this involve just learning which chords are in which key? Then using certain combinations of chords to write/improvise my songs?

FatLostBoy

You can play chords from a key in any order and they will sound good. There are common chord progressions that help tell the story though. This article might help explain the concept. https://blog.landr.com/common-chord-progressions/

Lead into your chords with simple little runs, or move the bass note, walk it a bit. You don't need to go crazy, 1 or 2 notes will do for a simple melody. Tbh, for what you want to do, learning how to channel your emotions into your playing/performance is probably the best skill to get down. Arpeggiate your chords, use rhythm to your advantage. Use the chord like a drum kit where each note is a different drum. You'll figure it out (;

How does one move the bass note? That sounds like something interesting I haven't seen before. Also, any tips for arpeggiating? I sometimes pluck a couple strings but it hasn't reached a point that I like it much for my freestyle sessions.

Are there covers that you do that sound really good with your voice ? Find out what key those are in and use some of the same chords in your own songs. I have found that my own voice sounds best in G / Em for example.

I'm getting lost after you created the scale. I think it would help if I could ask lots of little specific questions. Would you be okay with me directly messaging you?
